Derby Rules
- Have fun!
- All cars will be inspected at the weigh-in.
- Any cars not submitted the evening of the weigh-in will
race as part of the open division.
- We may be purchasing a new, faster track this year. Make
sure your car can survive several races!
- The maximum size for cars is 2-3/4" wide and 7” long.
There is no height restriction, but the car must be stable during the race.
- The car must weigh 5 ounces or less. The weight shown on
the official race scale is final.
- Use only dry powdered graphite for lubrication. This
must be added outside the school.
- You must use the body, axels, and wheels from your kit
to pass inspection.
- You may sand the wheel surfaces, but you may not change
the fundamental shape of the wheel.
- You may not add bushings or washers to the wheel/axel
assembly.
- If you cut new axel groves in the car body, they must be
located within 1/2” of the original grooves.
- All weights added to your car must not decrease the
clearance of your car to insure it will not drag.
- Cars must have their correct number attached and visible
at weigh-in.
- Once your car has been turned-in and inspected you may
not make any further adjustments, additions or repairs (including
lubrication).
- No cars can be accepted for the scout race after the
weigh-in. Cars turned-in after the weigh in can participate as part of the
open class race, but will not be eligible for the scout race or design
judging.
- If you need a replacement car, or an additional car for
the open class race, you may purchase additional kits from either the pack ($3
while supplies last) or from the Scout Shop.
- No shoes will be allowed in the gym on race day, so
either bring slippers or plan to be in your socks.
- You do not need to be present for race day. Your car
will be run unless you request to have it dropped.
- You may pull your car from the race at any time by
notifying the starter.
How Will The Race Be Run?
We will run a double elimination race. In this case the basic things to know are:
- All members of a specific scout rank will race against
each other determine the fastest car for that rank. The fastest single cars
from each rank will then race to determine the pack champion.
- The races within a scout rank will be run in heats of up
to six cars, where the fastest two cars from each heat will move-on to the
next level.
- The cars in each heat will run multiple, consecutive
races against each other to allow each car to race once in each lane (this
eliminates the issue where some lanes are faster than others).
- Cars are awarded points based on their placement in each
race. The cars with the top two point totals will move-on to the next level of
the race.
- All race displays will use the car number rather than
the name of the owner.
